Fluoride

Topical fluoride application (fluoride varnish) is a service that may be provided at recare visits, when indicated. When used appropriately, fluoride is both safe and effective at preventing dental decay (cavities). The decision to apply fluoride, and how frequently, should be based on an individual assessment of your child’s risk of developing cavities. If you have concerns about the application of topical fluoride, Dr. Posthuma welcomes an open discussion with you on this topic, and never wants you to feel you are being pressured to use fluoride for your child.

Sealants

Sealants are a protective covering that is applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth in order to prevent cavities. The AAPD reports that a review of data from multiple randomized controlled trials shows that the use of pit-and-fissure sealants reduces cavities on the chewing surfaces of permanent molars by 76% after 2 to 3 years of follow-up.

Oral Hygiene Instructions

At each recare visit, your child will receive feedback as to the quality of their at-home oral care routine. This feedback serves as positive reinforcement for a job well done, and also discusses any areas that may benefit from more time or attention.
